Collaborating with Kids: Book Cover Design

©Sarah Epstein - Oinky PotterFor week 16 of the 52-Week Illustration Challenge (2014), the theme was BOOK COVER. I collaborated with my 7-year-old son, Harvey, and it was a lot of fun. I was already creating two illustrations for the book cover theme, and Harvey got very interested in creating one himself. Before long he wandered back into my studio with a pencil sketch of Oinky Potter, the famous piggy wizard (he goes to Hogwarts, after all!). I suggested Harvey might like to colour it in, but this was met by that usual kid response of, “Mmmm…maybe later” (which means “Nup”). So I asked Harvey if I could please colour it up for him digitally, and he was rather pleased with this idea.

So here is his Oinky Potter gem, with a little bit of help from Mum. This ended up being shortlisted for the challenge’s picks of the week by the challenge founder, Tania McCartney. You can see it here.

I’ve been encouraging Harvey to write about Oinky’s magical adventures, but no luck yet. I’ll keep you posted. 😉
